Will You Qualify for a Federal Rebate if You Buy a New (Energy Star) Electric Range?
It depends on how much you earn and where you live. Your individual state will set the exact framework, but the guidelines in the IRA legislation call for the rebate amount to be dependent on how your household income compares with the median household income (HHI) of a particular area to be determined by the state. For instance, it may pertain to your ZIP code, county, or the entire state. These are not yet finalized Stand by for more info in the Fall of 2023 - but expect:
If you earn: *Up to 80% of the median HHI in your area, you get up to 100% of the cost of the new appliance (or up to $840, whichever is less).
*More than 80% but less than 150% of the HHI in your area, you get 50% of the cost of the new appliance (up to that $840 maximum).
*Above 150% of the median HHI in your area, you do not qualify for a rebate.
There are currently no federal or state Tax Credits for Electric Ranges/Stoves. However -
SMPA has local rebates for induction cooktops as follows:
Types of electric stoves:
Electric coil - Electricity flows through a coiled wire with high resistance. To prevent electric shocks, insulation surrounds that wire with a coating of metal
over that insulation. A flow up electricity heats up these coils under each of the burners. The higher the electric current, the more heat is generated.
Hot burners then transfer that heat to pots or pans. When the flow of electricity is slowed or stopped, the coils gradually lose heat.
Induction - A local field of electromagnetic energy is created when electricity flows through a copper coil under the cooktop. That magnetic energy can be
transferred to a pot or pan containing iron particles, heating the pan directly without first heating the cooktop.

Concerns with gas stoves: Recently, new data has emerged linking indoor gas stoves to certain health risks in people and pets. One article summarizing that data and resulting concerns was published in Scientific American, Jan. 19, 2023: Some Concerns with Indoor Gas Stoves Explained.
For those who now have a gas stove and have health concerns but cannot afford the switch to a new electric stove, there are now small (1 or 2 burner, 120 volt) countertop induction stoves available for reasonable prices (single burner cooktop often $50-$100 and double burner often around $200). These require induction capable cookware as described in the above articles.
